Last Saturday I went shopping at the organic supermarket. As usual I put my daughter to sit in the cart together and we started our tour from the shelves that give off a heavenly scent to me, a mixture of exotic spices, freshly baked bread and clothes hung out to dry in the sun . Maybe blame or credit for this mix of perfumes but the first instinct is to grab and put in the basket anything to try again once the feeling of being back home. It is with this positive spirit that we are going to the grocery store, thinking that a shop like that I just can not contain potentially harmful foods or not at all in keeping a healthy diet. I headed to the display of teas, a whole wall of colorful confections from which almost magical waves and know that there are lots of herbal teas for both adults and children that contain "flavors" (ie chemicals), and fennel. We regret to inform you of a recent discovery by researchers INRAN (National Research Institute for Food and Nutrition) who posted on "Food and Chemical Toxicology" sull'estragolo study, a natural substance contained in the seeds of fennel and, consequently, in teas and sachets of instant snapshots that based on this ingredient. The press release states that "estragole In 2001 he was recognized as a genotoxic carcinogen and European level, so that the addition of flavoring to ban processed foods." How come we keep getting seeds and teas on the market without the box there is a hint at the doses given and use not to exceed the consumption? Mystery! It seems that estragole creates problems only when consumed regularly and in excessive doses, so it was not recommended for children under 4 years of age and pregnant women and nursing mothers. If you want to read the full press release can be found here .
then I head to the department biscuits and snacks, "where usually the mothers with babies stationed at least 10 minutes and where, in my opinion, are what I call the bio- worst offenders. Let's face it, often to fool consumers just put on the package a nice green field, a country house, the sun shining and a cow lying lazily holding a blade of grass in his mouth, and immediately associate that product excellence, health and genuineness. Just turn the tables and read the packaging of ingredients to understand that organic snacks (less pesticides separately) are equal to traditional snacks are concentrated calories that children do not need, are made with refined flour and a little matter to me if the flour is spelled bio because it's still a poor food in nutrition! If you keep in mind that the ingredients on the label are listed in descending order (ie the one present in greater quantities than most poor), you will be astonished to read that many snack foods have sugar as the first ingredient and, again, just me Whether it is cane sugar, organic sugar is always! There are cakes that call themselves "spelled" spelled then when is the fifth ingredient, later refined wheat flour, sugar, eggs and chocolate ... Among the dozens and dozens of cookies, I found only one type containing only whole wheat flour Spelt and a few other ingredients, but to my surprise and disappointment, it disappeared from supermarket shelves. I asked for an explanation and they told me that some products do not keep that brand so I thought it over and under there should be some unjustified increase in prices, because otherwise you can not get rid of the only decent biscuit! Moving in the "condiments", despite my reporting over a year ago, I noticed that they still linseed oil on the shelves and not where it should be refrigerated to not stop the cold chain and thus cancel the beneficial effect of omega 3 fatty acids. They explained that the problem lies upstream because it's the same manufacturer that has the foresight to sell the oil bottled in dark bottles to protect the essential fatty acids but does not care for anything to keep it at low temperatures.
Since Saturday is a day of shopping in the afternoon I did a bio-going to find the pitfalls in the supermarket "normal", one of those so-called retail just to be clear. To my surprise I saw that the shelves are built on long green flag to indicate the presence of organic products in a way that simply looking out between the various lanes is much easier to find organic products and shopping in decent time, but once we spent at least an hour just to find the various products lying around. Obviously here in the department biscuits and snacks, "not even the trace of a product containing only whole wheat flour, wheat nor barley nor, lots of snacks with sugar in the first place, but the bucolic and attractive packaging. The bio-biggest scam is then represented by biscuits meant for us women who are health-conscious and we are obsessed with fiber, even were the Greek goddess of Panacea in person! In the list of ingredients heads "wholemeal wheat" and for a moment think that after all worth spending the beauty of nearly 3 € for a confezioncina of these cookies, but then is denied by the words put in brackets, which specifies that "wheat flour" means wheat flour refined by adding of wheat bran. Horror! We deal in a refined product for a full and healthy wiping his consciousness with the later addition of the bran that has certainly the same benefits that he would if he were still part of the grain of wheat. The department pasta and rice Fortunately, there is at least a brown rice and between different shapes of pasta, we spelled the word organic and full of nothing but ..... I wonder why!
In conclusion, we consumers have the power to decide what to buy (I choose!). If a product is appreciated and bought hardly disappear from the shelves, if not one but dozens of people instead point out the lack of different products, maybe someone will take the trouble to put on the market. Choose organic, I recommend, but do so using your head and keeping an eye on the table of composition of ingredients and the European brand of organic must be present by law on the package (I choose organic!)
